Sightseeing in Christchurch

Walk around Cathedral Square by Christ Church Cathedral built in 1881 and take a tour through it. It's the city's most important landmark and a good example of Gothic architecture in NZ. Guided city walks start from the square and a great way to see the architectural splendours of the city. Don't miss seeing the Wizard in action. This strange man dressed in long black velvet robes puts up a show in the Square in summer and entertains visitors, taunts and provokes the audience into a reaction with his spiel on bureaucracy, religion, feminism.......whatever.

The Southern Encounter Aquarium is a good place to see some of NZ's aquatic life. Enjoy the serenity of the River Avon, walk around the banks or take a canoe ride down the river. Stop by the Botanic Gardens, spend a restful hour or two and see some of the unique flora of the country. Museum buffs can head to the Canterbury Museum, which is a cultural and natural history museum of the Canterbury region. See lots of animal exhibits, the Maori Gallery and a good exhibition on Antarctic exploration. The Science Alive! Museum is great for science buffs and kids. The Ferrymead Historic Park and the Air Force Museum as well as the Yaldhurst Transport Museum are great outings for technology maniacs. The Robert McDougall Art Gallery has some of NZ's best art on show. The Arts Centre has a big entertainment centre, shops with lots of arts, crafts and woollen articles on sale of excellent quality and variety. You can watch the craftsmen and women as they create wonderful pieces of art. The Christchurch Tramway is a pleasure to ride on, and the Christchurch Gondola which heads to top of Mt. Cavendish is a fun ride with stunning views of the area. The National Marae (Maori cultural village) is 6 km away from the city. All visitors are welcome to drop in, have a look at the Maori art and crafts and also go to the Meeting House and the House of Learning. It's a terrific insight into their lives and shouldn't be skipped.
